50 Cent’s latest bon mot hit the airwaves recently, entitled “Okay, You’re Right”, and produced by Dr. Dre. In case you were wondering, no, this isn’t a return to the giddy, fearless revenge swagger that made him the king of New York. Instead, 50 has taken a page out of mentor Eminem’s book and opted for an over the top, borderline accented delivery. And that really highlights what’s gone wrong with 50, and with NYC in general. The beat bangs, the hook is well executed, and everything that should work is there, but we’re like the audience that sees the hole in the top hat; the magic has been replaced by mechanics, which is the kiss of death for any performer in any industry. Having chased trends non stop since The Massacre, 50 Cent may have forgotten how to rob an industry on the strength of his own style, instead relying on the tire treads of other hitmakers. Great, except we’ve already got one Diddy, and he’s wearing on us as is. Swing and a miss, and by last count that makes three for Before I Self Destruct…
